With its mild acid bite and strong, caramel sweetness, this single origin coffee will be instantly recognisable as hailing from the lush climes of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is a rugged, rainforested Central American country with coastlines on both the Caribbean and Pacific. Though its capital, San Jose, is home to cultural institutions like the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, Costa Rica is mainly known for its beaches, volcanoes, and wildlife. Roughly a quarter of its area is made up of protected jungle, teeming with plants and animals such as the spider monkey and quetzal bird.

Coffee production has played a key role in Costa Rica’s history and continues to be important to the country’s economy. Production increased from 158,000 tons in 1988 to 168,000 tons in 1992 and by 1997, the agriculture sector employed 28 percent of the labour force and produced 20 percent of Costa Rica’s total GNP. In 2006, coffee was Costa Rica’s number three export, after being the number one cash crop export for several decades. In 2015, the value of its coffee exports was US$305.9 million (compared to total agricultural exports of US$2.7 billion and total exports of US$12.6 billion). Coffee production increased by 13.7% percent in 2015/2016, declined by 17.5% in 2016/2017 but then increased again in the subsequent year. Despite its small size, Costa Rica now provides just under 1% of the world’s coffee production.

The largest growing areas are in the provinces of San José, Alajuela, Heredia, Puntarenas and Cartago from where it is exported both to cities within Costa Rica and internationally.

Our beans are produced by the Tarrazú co-operative (Coopetarrazú), one of the most celebrated in the world and one which consistently wins awards as the best producer in Costa Rica. The lot from which our Colombian beans are sourced is farmed by only thirty families within the community and just fifty bags are produced. Grown at high altitude, the beans attain the SHB (Strictly Hard Bean) designation. This term is synonymous with SHG (Strictly High Grown) which is used in other high altitude coffee producing countries.
